Police released footage Friday (March 15) of a 36-year-old man they believe was involved in an altercation with a 32-year-old man that led to a shooting that left the 36-year-old in critical condition on a subway in Brooklyn on Thursday (March 14).

The footage shows the 36-year-old walking into the Nostrand subway station via the emergency exit 10-15 minutes prior to the incident, according to the NYPD.

/”He did not pay his fare. He gets onto a Manhattan bound A train and he eventually gets into a dispute with another male. He eventually pulls a firearm out during that dispute, and ultimately he’s disarmed and shot with his own gun,/” said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey. /”Oftentimes, we see people enter to the subway station looking to cause harm and they never pay the fare.”

The incident comes as New York is stepping up security in the subway system throughout the city. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday (March 6) that 750 soldiers from the state’s National Guard to help New York City police check commuters’ bags in the busiest stations in the city’s sprawling subway system.

Another 250 officers from the New York State Police and the state-controlled Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police will also join the effort, which Hochul said was intended to deter crime. She announced the deployment in response to recent high-profile assaults on commuters and transit workers.

Crimes on the subway were down about 15% in February compared to the same month in 2023, according to police data. Hochul, a Democrat, said that commuters were not reassured by /”rattling off/” crime statistics.

NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper emphasized that incidence like these remain uncommon.

“Obviously we had a tragic event happen yesterday. Millions of riders rode the subway yesterday. The subway bureau, transit bureau took six crimes, including the shooting. Six out of millions and millions of people that boarded this, our subway system yesterday.”

The incident remains under investigation, according to the NYPD. (REUTERS)
