'We do it for future generations': Volunteer firefighters work tirelessly in Brazil's wetland fires
A group of volunteer firefighters in Brazil have taken the mission to face the fires that besiege the wetlands in Mato Grosso do Sul, and were seen busy battling blazes on Friday (June 14).
Alto Pantanal Brigade was created during the 2020 fires in Pantanal and relies on donations and the work of their volunteers.
For members of the brigade, their work is a commitment to the environment and for future generations.
Satellite data from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) showed that the Pantanal fires have surged almost tenfold so far this year. The figures have raised alarms as the region heads into the riskiest season for wildfires, which usually starts in July and peaks in August and September.
But in order to successfully fight the catastrophe, the fire brigades need help and resources from the government, said Gustavo Figueiroa, a biologist and director of the project SOS Pantanal. “Otherwise we’ll see the same scenario we saw in 2020./” -Report from Reuters
