Rescuers were able to move those trapped in rocky hills to safety as landslides washed away swathes of land and houses in several locations in the Mangan district, which covers north Sikkim and lies about 100 km (60 miles) north of the state capital Gangtok.
Sikkim authorities closed all government schools on Tuesday (July 18) until further notice due concerns over the safety of students, according to local media.
One of India’s most sparsely populated states, Sikkim, popular with trekkers for its Buddhist monasteries and spectacular trekking trails, is located in the Himalayan region and is surrounded by Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. -Report from Reuters
