On The Scene: Videos released by Taiwan’s coast guard on Thursday (July 11) showed what they said were Chinese coast guard ships entering prohibited waters around Taiwan’s frontline islands of Kinmen. In response to the alleged intrusion of its waters, Taiwan said it dispatched four of its own coast guard vessels to conduct one-on-one monitoring alongside the four Chinese ships. Kinmen is a short boat ride from the Chinese cities of Xiamen and Quanzhou. Taipei has controlled it since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with Mao Zedong’s Communists, who set up the People’s Republic of China.
