Police opened fire on demonstrators trying to storm Kenya’s legislature, with at least five protesters killed, dozens wounded and sections of the parliament building set ablaze as lawmakers inside passed legislation to raise taxes.

A Reuters journalist counted the bodies of at least five protesters outside parliament. A paramedic, Vivian Achista, said at least 10 had been shot dead.

At one place, a body could be seen lying on the pavement, head covered by a Kenyan flag. Police arrived and loaded the body into a van.

Some buildings and structures had been set on fire, with the smoke pervading through the city.

The protesters oppose tax rises in a country already reeling from a cost-of-living crisis, and many are also calling for President William Ruto to step down. – Report from Reuters
