Reigning women’s champion Miki Sudo made history after chomping down a record-breaking 51 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
In the men’s category, Chicago’s Patrick Bertoletti took home his first Mustard Belt with 58 hot dogs. Last year’s defending champion, Joey Chestnut, was excluded from this year’s event because he is sponsoring an all-veggie frankfurter of another brand.
The traditional 10-minute Nathan’s contest, a carnival-like spectacle broadcast on ESPN, held on Independence Day, began in 1980 when the winning hot dog eaters tied with just nine franks each.
