China took law enforcement measures to protect its sovereignty in the South China Sea after Philippine provocations and is committed to peaceful development and a defensive policy, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday (July 4). The spokesperson was referring to long-standing disputes between the countries over atolls in the South China Sea and demands from the Philippines for China to return what it called seized property and pay for damages. A prominent Philippine senator recently said on social media that she has knowledge of a Chinese plan to target her country with hypersonic missiles, though the national security council said it was unaware of any such security threat.
